5 Black-Owned, Women-Owned Beauty Lines

Have you ever heard the term “vote with your dollar”? In a capitalist society, where you spend your money matters. Corporate giants often take your money and use it to further their own agendas. If you want to help amplify the voices of people of color, give your dollar to black-owned businesses who are fighting on the frontlines.

Forbes Spotlight published an article called 75 Black-Owned Businesses To Shop From. We wanted to highlight 5 beauty-product companies that are black-owned AND women-owned. All of these companies use quality, natural ingredients in their products, so buying into them will not only support black communities, it will also support the move to more natural, cruelty-free beauty products!

Beauty Bakerie

Beauty Bakerie is a black-owned and woman-owned makeup company. The founder and owner, Cashmere Nicole, started the business when she was a single mother, fighting breast cancer. Nicole created this business with raising money for breast cancer treatment and research in mind. She has also donated over $100,000 to help orphaned children in Uganda. She calls them her “sugar babies”.

Some of Beauty Bakerie’s most popular products include their Creme Lip Whips, Cake Pop Lippies, and various eye shadow pallets (all named after tasty treats). Their colors are super vibrant and fun, and Nicole prides herself in making quality makeup products that stay on throughout the day. “Having long-lasting, smudge-free makeup may seem like a simple novelty to one person, but to me, the 8-15 times I would have spent touching up my makeup today are now the 8-15 opportunities I have to be in the moment. “

Beauty Bakerie also offers foundation colors, matching skin tones fair to dark, so everyone can find their perfect match! All of their products are cruelty-free, paraben-free, vegan, and smudge proof!

Briogeo

Founder, Nancy Twine, was working as an associate for Goldman Sachs, when she suddenly lost her mother in a car-accident. This tragedy pushed her to make a huge life-change and start her hair product line, Briogeo, using clean, naturally-derived ingredients. Twine’s goal was to use only the best ingredients to create products for all types of hair.

A few of Briogeo’s best-selling products include their Charcoal and Coconut Oil Micro-Exfoliating shampoo, their Don’t Despair, Repair! line, and their Be Gentle, Be Kind shampoo and conditioner sets, one of which uses banana and coconut oil to offer only the best moisture and hair repair!

Twine prides herself in creating products free of harsh sulfates, silicone, parabens, and artificial dyes. Briogeo products contain nutrient-rich ingredients, such as avocado, coconut oil, eucalyptus oil, and even kale! So you can trust that your hair is being properly nourished! You can head to their website to take their 5-question hair quiz, to find out what type of products would best suit your unique hair.

CURLS

CURLS was founded by Mahisha Dellinger, who, at the time, worked as a Marketing Manager for a Fortune 500 company. Dellinger was dissatisfied with the lack of natural hair products with quality and ingredients for thick and curly hair. “Our CEO’s desire was to create a remarkable, high quality, natural hair care line for an overlooked audience.” And she did just that!

Dellinger worked with leading cosmetic and wellness experts to develop CURLS. The philosophy behind CURLS is to celebrate your natural hair, and use the proper products for your best, healthiest natural hair. CURLS has a ‘Hair Type Guide’ on their website where they discuss hair types all the way from straight to coily, and what each hair type needs in a hair product. They also offer hair styling tips and have demo videos for each type of hair!

Their Blueberry Bliss Collection is one of their most popular hair collections, and can be found in some retails stores like Target and Walgreens. This collection is formulated with certified organic blueberry extract, aloe leaf juice, and chamomile extract, to “repair, protect, restore, and grow” your curls!

Black Girl Sunscreen

Black Girl Sunscreen was founded by Shontay Lundy in Miami, Florida in 2016. Lundy wanted to create a natural sunscreen specifically for melanin women. Most sunscreens on the market leave a white-residue on the skin, which simply doesn’t work for women of color! Women with darker skin need to protect their skin too, so rather than accepting that melanin women just had to avoid the sun altogether, Lundy created Black Girl Sunscreen. Their sunscreen doubles as a moisturizer for the skin, and dries completely clear.

Black Girl Sunscreen is oxybenzone, paraben, and fragrance-free. They advertise all of their products as natural, cruelty-free, vegan, and reef-safe. Black Girl Sunscreen also offers a recycling incentive- customers can send in their empty bottles to be recycled, and the customer receives a ‘special email surprise’ for doing so.

Black Girl Sunscreen offers sunscreen for both adults and children, and can be found in Target stores.

Footnanny

Gloria Williams created Footnanny, a line of Aromatherapy foot products, as a way of carrying on her mother’s legacy. Williams grew up watching her mother, an Alabama native, care for their sick and elderly neighbors by creating a cocktail of creams, ointments, and oils, and offering massage therapy using these creams. Williams’ mother believed that certain foods, oils, and teas, along with loving touch, played a crucial role in the healing of one’s ailments.

Footnanny offers creams, soaking salts, and essential oils specifically made for your feet! Their products contain high-quality, natural ingredients and aromas, ranging from grapefruit and lemon, to chocolate and banana. They offer a wide-variety of creams and other products containing various natural moisturizing ingredients. Footnanny’s Cedar Body Soaking Salts has even been featured in The Oprah Winfrey Magazine.

Footnanny donates to KIVA, a 501 non-profit organization that allows people to lend money via the Internet to low-income entrepreneurs and students.
